Violations Prevail in Egypt’s Constitutional Referendum

Cairo – The official results of the first round of Egypt’s constitutional referendum have yet to be released, but arguments over the outcome have already begun. Forces opposed to Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi and the Muslim Brotherhood (MB) insist that voters rejected the draft constitution by 66 percent. Morsi’s supporters, on the other hand, insist that the result was in their favor with 56.55 percent approving the constitution.

These contradictory reports come amidst silence from the supreme committee charged with supervising the constitutional referendum. Officials maintain that results will not be disclosed until the second round of voting, scheduled to take place next Saturday, 22 December 2012.

The numerous violations and irregularities reported during election day prompted civil political forces to protest again today in Tahrir Square and even in front of al-Ittihadiya presidential palace. From there, protesters headed to the headquarters of the supreme committee for supervising the constitutional referendum and demanded a re-vote. Read the rest of this entry »

Fake Pharaoh’s Feet of Clay – Morsy Reign Imperiled

(Washington, DC 11/24) It takes a real pharaoh to build a pyramid, especially one that lasts five thousand years. It took President Mohamed Morsy of Egypt one speech for the Egyptian public to see him for what he aspires to be – a new pharaoh, with powers beyond those of his predecessor Hosni Mubarak.  On Thursday, November 24, Morsy stood in front of a government building and announced a de facto dictatorship. The two key provisions of his decree concern a new constitution for Egypt and his absolute powers.  There can be no challenge whatsoever to “all constitutional declarations, laws and decrees” made by Morsy until the new constitution is ratified and a new parliament has been elected.  Then, he gave himself this blanket guarantee of absolute power until the next election: “The president is authorized to take any measures he sees fit in order to preserve and safeguard the revolution, national unity or national security.” Egypt Independent, November 22 Read the rest of this entry »

On November 6, your votes will be cast and tallied on voting machines manufactured and serviced by private companies.  The computerized voting machines run on software that is closely held as a trade secret by these companies.  Our elections officials are barred from examining the most important aspects of the software.  Why?  Because those same officials signed away our right to open access and inspection of the voting systems that tell us who won and who lost each and every election.  (Image: WikiCommons)

Part II – Rigged Elections for Romney?

Part I of this series suggested that there may well have been massive vote flipping for candidate Mitt Romney in the Republican primaries (Rigged Elections for Romney (10/22/12)  The article and the initial research analysis were received broadly.  In addition, highly motivated citizens across the country and a team of high school students contacted the authors for help replicating the research in their states.  The researchers, Francois et al., point out that this can be done with their open source techniques.

The basic argument is straightforward.  If you look at precinct level voting data arranged from the smallest to the largest precincts, you will see Romney’s gains increasing substantially as the cumulative vote increases.  For example, Ohio and Wisconsin show this clearly as do eleven other states presented here.  This extraordinary vote gain from smallest to largest precincts is so out of line, that the probability that this would happen by chance alone is often less than 1 out of a number represented by 1 preceded by 100 zeros and a decimal point, a value beneath the statistical package’s lower limits.  As a result, the researchers termed the suspected vote flipping for Romney the “amazing anomaly.” (The Amazing Statistical Anomaly) Read the rest of this entry »

Rigged Elections for Romney?

A group of independent researchers caught a pattern of apparent vote flipping during the 2012 Republican primaries that consistently favored Mitt Romney. A form of election fraud, vote flipping occurs when votes are changed from one candidate to another or several others during electronic voting and vote tabulation.  (Image:  Dean  Terry)

Vote flipping is difficult to detect because the vote totals remain the same for each precinct. In one of several possible scenarios, an instruction is given to a precinct level voting machine or to a county-level central tabulator. The corrupted totals from precincts are sent from county election officials to state elections board and published as final results. The group’s analysis is based on raw data from primary sources, local precincts, and state and county election records. The pattern of vote flipping raises serious doubts about the Romney victories in the 2012 Republican primaries in Wisconsin and the Ohio. Apparent vote flipping was demonstrated in the group’s paper for at least nine other 2012 Republican primaries as well.

The findings showed a consistent pattern of increasing votes and vote percentages for Romney in the precinct vote tally. The pattern emerges when precinct vote tallies are presented by candidate based on the size of a county precinct.

Wisconsin, for example, is represented in the graph below. Moving from the smallest to largest precincts, you can see Romney’s percent of the vote takes off and those of the others drop after about 7% of the votes are counted. Romney’s percentage of precinct votes goes up (the upward slope of the green line) while those of the three other candidates decline.

The steady increase in Romney’s percent of the vote and steady decline in Santorum’s represents a statistical anomaly. In this case, the anomaly is amazing according to the researchers. They argue that the probability of this happening by chance alone is so small it exceeds the capability of statistical packages to handle. Their software says Romney’s share of the vote, increasing with precinct size has zero probability of occurring by chance alone.

The significance of the Wisconsin analysis is of grave concern. Presuming the use of appropriate statistical measures and analysis, human intervention is the most likely available explanation.

Vote flipping gave Romney a 57,000-vote victory over Santorum in Wisconsin. Absent vote flipping, Santorum would have won over Romney by about 54,000 according the group’s analysis.

Was Wisconsin the only state where Romney’s share of the vote increased in this way as precinct size increased? Read the rest of this entry »

Listening to Paul Ryan’s speech at the Republican National Convention, I couldn’t place where I had come across something quite like this before. Then it struck me – Pravda! I used to subscribe to Pravda in high school and college, first to learn Russian, and second, to pursue a college program in Soviet studies. Pravda was a newspaper that specialized in the Big Lie – the Five Year Plan was always ahead of schedule, Soviet industrial capabilities exceeded that of any other country, people were starving on streets all across America. The newspaper was a non-stop stream of lies, just as Paul Ryan’s speech was studded with Big Lies – lies that were easily disprovable, such as Barack Obama did nothing about the Simpson-Bowles recommendations to reduce the budget deficit (Paul Ryan didn’t mention he voted against these recommendations when the House killed any chance of enacting them); or that Obama made it easier for people to live off welfare (the President altered the enrollment rules of welfare at the request of Republican governors); or the Romney favorite – Obama cut over $700 billion of Medicare benefits for individuals (the cuts were imposed on hospitals and insurance companies, not beneficiaries, and Romney has the same cuts in his economic plan).  (Image:  Wikipedia) Read the rest of this entry »

Polite Fascism Contracts The Right To Vote – The turning point for VoterID legislation

Introduction: The article below was written right after the Supreme Court’s 2008 decision upholding Indiana’s Voter ID law.  By upholding that law, the court allowed subsequent laws restricting the right to vote throughout the country. 

Voter ID laws require that citizens present a photo identification before they cast their ballot.   This requirement solves a fictional problem, “voter fraud,” individuals voting illegally.  I review the court’s decision based on totally inadequate evidence and provide background on the little-discussed origin of laws like this.   As Civil War Reconstruction ended, the KKK and other white supremacist groups in the Old South sought to stop black Americans from voting.  The laws did just that for decades until the Voting Rights Act helped correct the problem.

There is no more reason for Voter ID laws now than there was in 2008, unless the goal is to suppress voting by the poor, the young, and minorities.  These groups are far more likely to be without an acceptable photographic identification than the rest of the population.

The Court embodies the dilemma of our modern culture.
